The past Star World Champions wanted to prove their worth on the opening day of the 2021 Western Hemisphere Championship in Miami. The three Gold Stars on the race course claimed a bullet each, John MacCausland / Guy Avellon (USA) won the first race, Augie Diaz / Bruno Prada (USA/BRA) the second and are second overall while Paul Cayard / Luke Lawrence (USA) won the third and last one and are leading the series.

The Star Western Hemisphere Championship has lifted the curtains today, April 22nd, in Miami, hosted by the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and organized by Diaz Marine and the International Star Class. It is the first Championship of the year 2021 and the first one in North America since COVID-19 shuffled the regatta schedule worldwide. Much anticipation lies in the boat park these days in Miami, all of the 21 teams are eager to start racing tomorrow, some of them have attended the Bacardi Cup a month ago in these same waters, but others are just starved for true action on the water.
Entry is now open for the 2021 Silver Star WHC, to be sailed out of Miami, FL April 22-25.
The Star Class has approved Biscayne Bay Yacht Club to host the 2021 Western Hemisphere Championship to be sailed April 22-25. Keep checking the Championship website as we're updating content as quickly as possible.
In light of the current global outbreak of the Corona Virus, we are evaluating our options for running the U30 and WHC in a way that is safe and enoyable for our community. We will accumulate all the facts in the coming weeks and make a decision on whether to postpone the regattas. We appreciate all the support from the Star Class, Lake Sunapee Yacht Club, donors, volunteers and sponsors.

The Star boat is often seen as one of the finest, most challenging classes to compete in. It requires dedication and hard work to be successful. This weekend, 26 sailors made their way out to the Pacific for the Star Western Hemisphere Championship, where a handful of sailors proved just how dedicated they really were.
By the end of day three, the majority of the top five sailors on the scoresheet were already determined. On the final day, day four, the order barely budged. Carl Buchan, sailing with his son Jamie Buchan, won the last race and the series overall. Following in second was Brian Ledbetter sailing with Magnus Liljedahl. In third place was Eric Doyle sailing with Payson Infelise.
First place finisher Carl Buchan commented on his success. “It was a hard fought series. The last couple of breaks went our way and being consistent was our main strategy. The first race today we took off after the start and then just couldn’t get out of our own way. The second race we needed to pass a couple of boats and thankfully we did. Both races had a lot more position changes today and the racing was really close.”
